Birding and ringing in the Albufera

Spring is already here, so it is a perfect time to ring and see migrants as well as summer visitors. I went to my favourite reserve in the Albufera Natural Park. / La primavera ya esta aquí, es el momento perfecto para anillar y observar aves migradoras y estivales. El martes fui a mi reserva favorita en el Parque Natural de la Albufera.

  Willow Warbler / Mosquitero Musical

 It is a common capture in wetlands during the migration. They come to Europe to breed from tropical Africa. / Es una captura común en humedales durante la migración. Vienen a Europa desde África tropical para reproducirse .

It is a Mediterranean specie who has just arrived from its wintering quarters.

Glossy Ibis / Morito Común

 There were around 40 Glossy Ibis. This year is expected them to breed as they did last year. / Habían alrededor de 40 ejemplares. Este año se espera que se reproduzcan al igual que lo hicieron el año pasado.

It is another resident specie. In winter we get thousands of wintering Red-crested Pochards from North Europe. / Otra especie residente. En invierno recibimos miles de patos colorados invernantes del norte de Europa.

Extremadura "The raptors paradise"

Last week we enjoyed of one of the best birding areas of all Europe. We visited the west of Spain, the Extremadura region.  This Woodchat Shrike was imitating the song of the serins / Este Alcaudón común estaba imitando el canto de los verdecillos.

In the National Park of Monfragüe we could complete all the raptors targets; Black Vulture, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Bonelli´s Eagle, Black and Red Kite, etc. / En el Parque Nacional de Monfragüe pudimos observar todas las rapaces que esperábamos, Buitre Negro, Águila Imperial Iberica, Buitre Leonado, Alimoche, Águila Perdicera, Milano Negro y Real, etc.

Red-legged Partridge together with rabbits are basic food sources for raptors in Spain / La perdiz roja junto con el conejo son la base alimenticia de numerosas rapaces en España.

One of the rarest raptors in the world. The entire population lives in Spain, that is one of the main reason to come to Spain, to see this wonderfull bird. / Una de las rapaces más escasas del mundo. Toda la población mundial se localiza en España, esta es una de la principales razones para visitar España y observar esta maravillosa ave.

Other birds we saw are: Great Bustard, Calandra Lark, Eagle Owl, Black Stork, Thekla Lark, Lesser Kestrel, Red-billed Chough, Spanish Sparrow, Hen and Montagu's Harrier, Black-shouldered Kite and many more. / Otras aves que pudimos observar son: Avutarda, Calandria, Búho Real, Cigüeña Negra, Cogujada Montesina, Cernicalo Primilla, Chova Piquirroja, Gorrión Moruno, Aguilucho Pálido y Cenizo, Elanio y muchos más.

My local birding patch / My area local de observaciones de aves

Last weekend I did a tour for 2  birders members of the Hellenic Ornithological Society. As they were staying in an Hotel in my city, we decided to visit the interesting local areas instead of travelling to other reserves. So we had more time to try so many delicious courses. We enjoyed with many birds, wintering species, migrants and summer species in an Special Protected Area for Birds. / El pasado fin de semana, realicé una visita guiada para 2 miembros de la Sociedad Griega de Ornitología. Dado que ellos estaban alojados en un hotel en mi ciudad, decidimos visitar las interesantes reservas locales en vez de viajar a otras áreas. Tuvimos más tiempo para disfrutar de la gastronomía. Pudimos observar un montón de aves, especies invernantes, migrantes y estivales.

También pudimos disfrutar de especies como el Pechiazul, Buscarla Unicolor, Aguilucho Lagunero, Águila Real, Pato Colorado, Garceta Común, Garceta Bueyera, Martín Pescador, Chorlitejo Chico, Verdecillo, Abubilla, Gaviota Cabecinegra, Sardenian Warbler, Carricerin Real, Estornino negro,  etc.

El Hondo de Elche y las salinas de Santa Pola

Last November I proposed to my friends of the company “Iniciatives Culturals” a birding tour to the south of the Valencia Region. They were very glad about this proposal.

Last Sunday, the bus left at 8:00 a.m. with me in charge to lead 36 persons through two very interesting birding areas, the Natural Parks of el Hondo de Elche and the Salinas de Santa Pola. / El pasado noviembre propuse a mis amigos de la empresa Iniciatives Culturals un recorrido ornitológico por el Sur de la Comunidad Valenciana. Ellos quedaron encantados con la propuesta.

El pasado domingo, el autobús salió a las 8:00 estando yo encargado de dirigir a 36 personas a través de dos interesantes áreas de observación de aves, el Parque Natural del Hondo de Elche y las Salinas de Santa Pola.

The day of the Great Bustards / El día de las avutardas

At 7:30 this morning I picked up my Finish client Helena. We went to one of the best spots in Europe to watch steparian species.

When we were arriving, two Great Bustards females flew over us. I stopped the car in the ditch to see these wonderful species that can weight up to16 kg. I call them the European ostrich.

Waders in the Albufera

It looks like the freezing air from Siberia that we have in Europe at the moment is pushing many waders to South Europe. One of their favourites spots is the Albufera de Valencia, with 17000 ha of muddy rice fields, perfect habitat for these birds. I have attached a the end some pictures of my last ringing session.
I want to thank Jana for supporting our wildlife. My Canadian friend came from Madrid to see the abundant and interesting wildfowl we have at the Albufera Natural Park.


Parece ser que el aire Siberiano que recorre Europa, esta empujando numerosas limícolas al Sur del continente. Uno de sus puntos favoritos es la Albufera de Valencia con sus 17000 ha de campos de arroz que están actualmente siendo fangueados para posteriormente sembrar el arroz. He añadido al final algunas fotos de mis última sesiones de anillamiento.
Quiero agradecer a Jana por su apoyo a la conservación. Mi amiga Canadiense vino desde Madrid para ver las abundantes e interesantes aves acuáticas que tenemos en la Parque Natural de la Albufera.

40 Grey Plover, 14 Wood Sandpiper, 200+ Sanderling, Golden Plover, 120+ Lapwing, Greenshank, 120+ Ruff, Snipe, 4 Booted Eagle, Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, 30+ Pintail, Teal, 300+Red-Crested Pochard, 60+Wigeon, 140+Shoveler, Sandwich Tern, Yellow-legged Gull, 30 Purple-Swamp-hen, Serin, Greenfinch, Chiffchaff, Chaffinch, Meadow Pipit, Crag Martin, etc.. Not bad considering how cold and strong was the wind.
